Zotero To GROK Codex

As an example of how useful Zotero can be, I've created a Firefox Extension, ZoteroToGROKCodex, to export references directly into the GROK Codex.

Install the ZoteroToGROKCodex extension. Updated to Version 1.0.5: Now compatible with Firefox 3.0, and Zotero up to v1.4 (meaning, I haven't tested it with Zotero 1.5 Sync Preview)

Zotero is an open source citation manager from George Mason University. It is a free alternative to citation managers like Endnote, Refworks, etc. The main advantages of Zotero over other citation management systems are:

  1. It is a Firefox Extension, so the Zotero application integrates closely with your normal browsing workflow. Zotero scans all the web pages you visit for citation metadata, and can automatically import references it finds on the page. It works particularly well with Google Scholar, Web of Science, Pub Med, UI Library Catalog (InfoHawk) and a growing list of web pages and services.
  2. It is open source, and it has an open API. This means that you are free to build upon it, add functionality, and use your own data as you see fit.
  3. Current development plans for the next version include remote backup and storage of bookmarks (so you can access your references anywhere, from multiple computers, have multiple people write to a single repository) and social citation sharing (so you can see what other people are citing - very Web2.0).
  4. You can connect directly from the citation in Zotero to the full length article from home if you go to preferences->General->Resolver and enter http://infolink.lib.uiowa.edu/sfx_local. Then the UIowa libraries looks for any available full-text document and asks for your uiowa username and password.

  1. Integration with Word Processors like MS Word, OpenOffice, has improved quite a bit. You can also drag and drop references in whatever citation style that you'd like. I think this is especially good for Google Documents.

[edit] Requirements

[edit] Usage

  1. Install the ZoteroToGROKCodex extension .
  2. Add some references into Zotero. Do some searching on Google Scholar or any other site supported by Zotero translators.
  3. Add a note to the reference. This will become the body of the GROK Codex page
  4. Add some tags (categories). This will become the category of the GROK Codex page
  5. Right click on the item, and select Export to GROK Codex
  6. A new window should open to allow you to edit the new page before you submit it to the Codex

[edit] Known Issues/Bugs

This is a very early, alpha, release. There are bound to be problems. Here's what I know about:

  • If you try to overwrite a page that already has text, ZoteroToGROKCodex will alert you, but will not change the text on the page. This should be a dialog to allow you to 1) overwrite page, 2) create a new page, or 3) cancel.
  • Text strings are not properly localized.

[edit] Wishlist

  • Link citation to Google scholar, or the GROK Literature section
