Ted’s a great resource
He pointed me to a new mote hardware platform called Epic. This is a 1″ x 1″ square with a CC2420 radio (the same we use now). It’s got 16 Mbits of flash and is low power. Sounds like a great, compatible system.

This is a bit preliminary (haven’t looked into it in any detail), but there’s a new chip in the AVR line (think Arduino) that combines an atmega processor and a radio chip compatible with BOTH 802.15.4 — what the Telos is using — and 802.11 (wifi). Pretty sweet, if it works http://www.atmel.com/dyn/resources/prod_documents/8266S.pdf
Don’t know if this is on the market yet, if there is a platform (board with antenna, etc) or anything else. But it’s definitely the direction that vendors will be going for a wireless embedded platform. So, think of the link above as something on the horizon.
The Epic platform is a proven, working thing, and something we could just design a board around if it works out to be cost-effective.
